[puma-news] Found Puppy

Apparently homeowners on Cumberland Gap road had a small opening that
permitted what they thought to be a fox into their garage to munch the
available dog food -- when the puppy was discovered and inquiries
made......a neighbor said, " I just received an email about someone losing
a puppy -- lets give them a call." Cori and Tom are extremely grateful
since their puppy survived the snowstorm last Sunday.

Thanks to the alert--the puppy was found. Yay!!

[puma-news] Re: remember to vote

Dear Pumitas y Pumitos,

Please remember to vote in the November 1 election. Because this is an odd
year and the ballot issues puzzling, please vote and pay careful attention
to these issues. The crux of Referenda C&D is funding for health, education
and transportation. Please mail in your ballots by the deadline, November 1.

Thanks for your consideration....

I located a snowplow company who will come over here.
Mark at Sno-busters 303 258-3777. He came by and gave me an estimate.
He will be doing 2 houses here on Pine Glade so far - from Coal Creek I
believe.

[puma-news] Please Vote Yes on Ballot 5A!

Dear Neighbors,
If you are in the library district (you got a yellow postcard recently if
you are), you will have a chance to vote on Ballot Issue 5A. This issue
would enable Nederland Community Library to collect the full amount of
taxes that we voters overwhelmingly approved in 2002.

The community library has grown and increased its services to the
community and surrounding areas, but does need the full allotment of taxes
that approval of Ballot 5A would garner in order to cover its operating
expenses.

I have been involved in the library on a volunteer basis as well as a
patron. We are fortunate to now have a staffed library with great
resources for kids, young adults, adults and seniors - let's do what we
can to keep that going!

Please show your support of the library by voting yes for ballot issue 5A
and encouraging everyone else you know to do the same! Remember that this
election is mail-in only, so send your ballot in by October 27th to be
sure your vote will count.

If you have questions about the initiative I'd be happy to try and answer
them.

Thanks for your support,
Susie Gallaudet

RE: [puma-news] Snowplowing

I don't know of anyone doing plowing for hire. Here's why:

Most services like Sugarloaf don't last very long. The economics just aren't
there. You have an expensive, complex piece of equipment that you are only
using a small amount of time. It has to have a big engine, so it uses a lot
of fuel. When you're using it, it's typically during the worst conditions
(causing breakdowns, which are expensive to fix, and mean you can't charge
for plowing that you can't do). So, you're trying to get enough customers to
pay for that expensive truck and plow, and its maintenance. If you get
enough customers to make a go of it, along comes a big storm. In a big
storm, it takes longer to plow each customer, and what was just enough
customers is now too many! And most of those customers will be upset,
because they want to be plowed first.

This will be the twenty-second winter that I've plowed my 0.7 mile driveway
on Porter Ranch. I also plow HCFD Station #4 and my mother's drive. That's
more than I want to plow, already. I've worn out two plows and one truck
over the years (I'm on my second truck and third plow). In other words, I've
paid a bit of fools' tax, learning the ropes. If someone wants to get a plow
for themselves, I'd be more than happy to share what I've learned, and point
them in the right direction.

Hi Bonnie:

Your note from last week suggests an interest in exploring ways to reduce overhead (with an environmental consciousness) as the cost of living continues to climb.

Here are some ideas we are using now to reduce costs:

1.  Organic Produce Delivery:

There's a new service up here that delivers fresh organic produce (also some grains, coffee, honey, etc) once a week to your door at competitive prices (actually, if you factor in gas and time...they win).  They use locally farmed product whenever possible:

http://www.denver.doortodoororganics.com

2.  Cell phone for emergency/minimal use...$10/month, free phone, no contract.  25 cents a minute for calls.  No charge for AAA or emergency calls.  Cingular service, seems to work in many areas up here (as recently covered by other emailers):

Consumer Cellular Phone:  1-800-686-4460

3.  Trash & Recyclables Pick up

I've been informed that One Way has a half price scale for pick up of one can a week.  Recyclables pick up is extra charge.
High Country Rubbish will pick up four 33 gallon bags and most recyclables at better than half the price of One Way.

Phone:  303-642-0303

4.  Buying supplements and other products at Whole Foods?

It's no secret that you can save more than 50% on line for the same products.  Here's one of many good sites:

http://www.myvitanet.com

5.  Paying for airplane tickets?

Practically all stores and services/utilities (including insurance companies, phone, propane...even the post office!) accept MasterCard/VISA.  Collect enough "air miles" and never pay for tickets again.  Here's an example of one:

http://www.chase.com/united

No doubt other folks have lots of other ideas...

[puma-news] The far right plan to pay for rebuilding the gulf coast

If you have not heard of "Operation Off-set", the plan by some
extremely short-sighted congressional members to gut many social,
environmental and energy programs supposedly to pay for repairing the
damage to the gulf coast region after the recent hurricanes, check out
this web site:

http://gristmill.grist.org/story/2005/9/26/16541/5527?source=weekly

If you find the plan to be a terrible idea, please inform your senators
and representative in congress.

Does anyone up here (Magnolia area) have the new GSM technology cell phone

am on that service but thinking of upgrading the phone but need to know it
works up here.
Thanks for the help.
